When exploring Whitby YC, a must-visit place, it has got to be the Whale Bones at the top of West Cliff. The whale bones create the perfect frame for an iconic view across the town and towards the Abbey. However, this was not constructed as public art but as a warning and message from the past.

Whitby has had strong links to the whaling industry going back to the 18th century due to the wealth created, but this was a dangerous industry.

With great wealth came risk and loss of lives, so to reassure onlookers that the crew was safe, the crew would tie a whale jaw bone atop the ship's mast.

As iconic as this whalebone arch is, however, this is not the original. Still, a replacement in 2003, the actual bones were given to the Whitby Archive Heritage Centre to symbolise the dangerous trade.
