The Flamborough Heritage Coastline attracts people all year round. People watch the wildlife and admire the brilliant white chalk cliffs, which Thornwick Bay nestles within. During the Spring to Summer, this is a great place to enjoy a clifftop walk.
At different times of the year, you will see Puffins or even Pospoises in the surf. The area takes on a different feel in the winter when you see the drama of the storming sea crashing against the cliffs. This can be a very wild area with high winds, so cliff walks should be considered carefully when the weather is stormy.
Interestingly, Thornwick Bay derives its name from "Thor", the God of Thunder, because of the roar of the breaking waves on the rocks during a North Easterly gale that pounds the magnificent cliffs.
When visiting Thornwick Bay as part of Bridlington YC in the winter, you can easily imagine why the stretch of water north of the Lighthouse was named 'the graveyard' by the sailing crew.
With the dominating cliffs, and the exposed area it took many a ship, and marine charts show hundreds of wrecks off Thornwick Bay, making this an exciting spot for Scuba Divers.
