David Atherton, Yorkshire baker and Great British Bake Off (GBBO) winner has returned to his roots to promote Route YC as one of the UK’s top food and travel destinations in 2024. Originally from Ruswarp near Whitby, David is passionate about local and seasonal food and drink from his home turf on the Yorkshire coast. He’s also keen to show visitors and locals alike why they need to explore the Yorkshire coast’s fantastic food scene. He brought along his rescue pup Kai and they sampled food and drink from the region’s most-loved dog friendly eateries.
We caught up with David after he’d visited a few foodie destinations along the Yorkshire coast to find out which ones hit the spot!
David’s top Route YC picks
Family run Botham’s is a particular highlight on the Yorkshire coast food and drink trail. Botham’s bakery and tearoom on Skinner Street in Whitby offers a true taste of Yorkshire – you MUST try their Whitby Lemon Buns and Whitby Gingerbread!
Multi award winning chef Michael Burgoyne’s ‘Wolds Restaurant’ is the only two AA Rosette restaurant in the Scarborough area. Wolds showcases locally-grown, sustainable and seasonal food. They also offer accommodation.
A personal favourite for David is Marie Antoinette's on Church Street in Whitby, he believes they serve the best scones on the Yorkshire coast!
The Farrier at Cayton is a luxurious modern restaurant where dogs are also welcomed throughout the day. They serve ever-changing seasonal menus that showcase the best produce sourced from local farmers and suppliers.
Perfect for pooches, the Bike & Boot in Scarborough is a modern seafront hotel with 65 quirky rooms, a hybrid bar-restaurant-cafe and on-site facilities for dogs, walkers, bikers and surfers. Dogs and their owners are made to feel very welcome with dog treats and the free use of the groom room to wash sandy paws. It’s the perfect place to stay for a dog-friendly holiday on Route YC.
The Little Angel in Whitby brews its own ales with quirky names and the waste from the brew process is turned into dog treats.
“Route YC is a true celebration of the best the Yorkshire coastline has to offer and has given me the chance to explore a new range of places to eat and drink that I hadn’t tried before. There are so many great places to explore along the Yorkshire Coast, but I was surprised how many serve amazing local food and drink and are dog-friendly.”
