Where to Surf

Route YC is home to some of the top surf spots in the UK, so grab your board and let's hit the waves as we look at surfing on the Yorkshire coast.

Cayton Bay

Between the towns of Scarborough and Filey lies Cayton Bay. Amongst the most well-known for its consistent surf all year round thanks to the sandbanks in the bay, winter is when it really hits its sweet spot.

Scarborough

Scarborough is home to two beaches which are both popular for surfing, the north bay delivering larger, more powerful waves and the south being kinder for beginners. Both are backed by sea walls so best at low tide.

Whitby

Whitby’s a great all-round beach destination. There are plenty of facilities to make a beach day easy and convenient, and for surfers the gentle but consistent waves are ideal. Make the most of being able to surf at all stages of the tide, and the swell that rarely reaches 6ft before progressing further down the coast to the bigger waves.

Where to stay

There are lots of accommodation options on the Yorkshire coast for those who love outdoor activities. If you're looking for somewhere central where you can store your kit indoors, we recommend The Bike & Boot in Scarborough. Located on the south bay, it's facilities for surfers are first class, offering not only safe indoor storage but changing facilities, shower rooms plus a washing and drying station to keep your kit clean, safe and ready for the next ride. Surfers with a sweet tooth can take advantage of the free coffee and cake every afternoon and there's a cool cinema free of charge for guests to use.

The Sands Seaview Apartments in Scarborough are also a great option. Centrally located so you’re just a stone’s throw from the beach, and just across the road from Dexter’s Surf Shop so you can pick kit up and arrange lessons easily too.
