The Hornsea Route is an area of juxtaposition, with market town beauty, against an eaten and collapsing coastline. Yet, this hauntingly beautiful area stands proud and gives a true Lakeland by the Sea experience.
This area should be explored at a slower pace, packed with walks, hikes and cycling throughout, so outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers should set up base at one of the many parks in and around the area.
Put on your sailing shoes and head to Hornsea Mere for a relaxing sail on the lake. Yorkshire's most significant natural freshwater lake is an excellent place to try sailing for the first time or pack the picnic and grab a rowing boat.
Step back in time and see the colourful and iconic prints from the Hornsea Pottery collection. Once manufactured in the town, you can now see the pieces on show at Hornsea Museum or follow the Pottery Trail to see how the town has captured its history.
Set the alarm and head to the Mappleton vantage point early to capture the sunrise against the rugged, eroding cliffs. Pack a flask of coffee in the winter as this is an area perfect for exploring on foot, but you'll need to wrap up warm!
Check in to Bettison's Folly, which can be found just off Newbegin. Nowhere else will you see this arts and craft tower steeped with an unusual historical tale.
On Hornsea YC, a couple of miles north of Hornsea, is the quaint village of Skipsea with a "castle" that is great for exploration and a must-visit for history lovers. But, let us be clear; this isn't a "castle" but more of a grassy mound, so don't keep walking, hoping to see turrets. Skipsea Castle has a fascinating history and is a great place to visit to see an area now reclaimed by the land.
If you are getting into the "swing" of route life on Route YC, you should check in to Hornsea Golf Club. Initially opened in 1908, the course is superb coastal, including extensive gorse and wind-blasted thorn.
There are plenty of things to do on the Hornsea Route; what will you add to your itinerary?
Travelling throughout the Hornsea Route
All vehicles: Take care of the narrow and winding country roads and look for stopping places.
Take care walking on the beaches by cliff sides. The effects of coastal erosion can be seen here, so take care to avoid falling debris.
Book your activities in advance to maximise your time away, especially if you want a personalised wildlife experience.
Explore more on foot, or you'll miss the beauty! So, park up the car and explore on bike or foot, but save the bus timetable to get you back to your base.
