Between Scarborough and Whitby, you will find a secluded cove and waterfall called Hayburn Wyke. To get to it, you will walk through the woodland to access the beach and find this hidden gem for a day of exploration or picnic stop.
Hayburn is another nod to Anglo Saxon heritage of the area, meaning 'hunting enclosure by a stream', and Wyke is the Norse word for 'sea inlet or creek'.
To set your walk off with a warm glow, stop at The Hayburn Wyke Inn before walking from here through the wooded valley. The dramatic cliffs covered with dense woodland vegetation provide the backdrop to this unique find and with a waterfall that is so close that it cascades directly onto the rocky beach.
You will undoubtedly see wildlife from roe deer to foxes and several breeding birds like woodpeckers - a perfect area for nature lovers. The beach is a paradise for children, who can while away the hours exploring a large amount of different coloured pebbles and rocks.
This is also a great place to join the Cleveland Way or Cinder track if you want a more ambitious walk.
