Make a splash on Route YC

Whether you have kids or are a big kid yourself, here are some of our favourite ways to make a splash on Route YC.

Speedboat experiences

If you have the need for speed and want to feel the wind in your hair, a great way to experience it is by jumping onboard one of the many Speedboats to hire in the area. You can hop on these at Scarborough and Bridlington harbour, and most will do everything from a 10-minute zip around the bay up to hour-long sea safaris, where, if you're lucky, you might be followed by porpoises in the area.

Alpamare

If you want to take it up a notch and give the family something they can all dive into, you should check out Alpamare, the indoor water park with its slides and indoor pools. If the thought of throwing yourself down slides isn't for you, and you want something a bit more leisurely, they also have an outdoor heated infinity pool.

Our Top Tip: The Open Air Theatre is a stone's throw away, so if the wind is blowing right, you'll get to hear some of the great acts whilst you relax in the infinity pool!

North Yorkshire Waterpark

If you join Route YC on the Scarborough route on Pickering Road, the North Yorkshire Waterpark is a must-stop place for adrenaline junkies.

From ziplines to paddleboarding, with a giant inflatable obstacle in between, there's plenty to get your heart pumping. You can hire everything you need on-site, and a great place to grab a coffee to relax afterwards!

Surfing at Cayton Bay

If you've always fancied taking on the North Sea, you'll be in safe hands with one of the great surf schools in the area. One of our favourites has everything from surfing classes and equipment hire to paddleboarding and coasteering.

You'll see groups of sea swimmers taking on the coast at all times of the year, but if this is your first time taking a dip, time your visit to when the sea temperature is warmer towards September.

Embrace the Wild

With plenty of lakes in the area there are opportunities to take a dip in the wild, but be vigilant and know what your getting into and importantly, how to get out!

Heres some top tips on staying safe from a great resource you should read up on before taking a dip.

1 Never swim in canals, urban rivers, stagnant lakes or reedy shallows
2 Never swim in flood water and be cautious of water quality during droughts
3 Keep cuts and wounds covered with waterproof plasters if you are concerned
4 Avoid contact with blue–green algae
5 Never swim alone and keep a constant watch on weak swimmers
6 Never jump into water you have not thoroughly checked for depth and obstructions
7 Always make sure you know how you will get out before you get in
8 Don’t get too cold – warm up with exercise and warm clothes before and after a swim
9 Wear footwear if you can
10 Watch out for boats on any navigable river. Wear a coloured swim hat so you can be seen
