With a rich history and stunning views of the North Sea, this route is the perfect choice for any cyclist looking for an adventure with a unique twist. In this blog post, we'll explore the history and natural beauty of the Cinder Track, providing a comprehensive guide for anyone looking to take a ride along the route.

The Cinder Track - An Introduction

Stretching for 21.7 miles, the Cinder Track begins in Scarborough and travels through picturesque villages offering both countryside and coastal views. Named the number one UK cycling staycation route by Raleigh, who praised the proximity of pubs and campsites close to the route and the superb air quality, we couldn't agree more.

The Route

This off-road route travels slightly inland through the North Yorkshire National Park and is a wide, relatively flat route with some stretches of steady incline. Perfect for cyclists of all ages and abilities, it begins unusually from the car park at Sainsbury's in the centre of Scarborough and ends at the top of Stakesby Vale; riders can then choose to head down into Whitby by continuing to Bagdale.

The Cinder Track is owned and maintained by Scarborough Borough Council and has seen an extensive refurbishment plan to ensure it continues to top the list of cycling routes in the UK. Check out a detailed route map and read the helpful pointers and directions for crossings.

Our top spots to stop for refreshments are the Hayburn Wyke Hotel at Cloughton and the Raven Hall Hotel at Ravenscar; both feature our Route YC outdoor bicycle repair stations, just in case you need to make any quick adjustments or repairs on the go.

The Scenery

Countryside views are abundant from Scarborough to Cloughton, but that's when the scenery starts to take shape as the track enters the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and continues towards Whitby.

Riders can expect to see elevated coastal views of beautiful villages such as Robin Hood's Bay, brightly coloured hills covered in heather and many historical remnants of the track's railway history, plus an impressive viaduct all along the way.

The track is used by walkers and riders alike, each passing with a friendly greeting, and the welcome is always warm at the many pubs and cafes along the route.

This ride can be done leisurely as a family or competitively with friends, but its straightforward nature allows for relaxation at any pace.

The History

The Cinder Track, as it is now known, has a long and exciting history. It was once a railway line connecting Scarborough to Whitby and opened in 1885. This railway line transported goods and passengers up and down the coast for almost eighty years until its closure in 1965. Following this, the track was left unused until it was eventually converted into a public access off-road route for walkers, horse riders and cyclists in 1990.

The track gets its name from the ballast used on the railway; rather than crushed stone, it was made from cinders, hence the name 'Cinder Track'.

The route is incredibly scenic and provides a wonderful insight into the North Yorkshire Coast's past. Along the track, you can see remnants of the old railway line, such as old tunnels, embankments and bridges, which provide glimpses into the area's past. There are also several points of interest to explore along the route, such as villages, churches and quarries.

The Cinder Track is a beautiful, relaxing cycling route with a fascinating history. Whether you want to explore the area's past or simply enjoy the epic views, the Cinder Track is one of our top cycling trails whilst completing Route YC.
