A taste of the sea on Route YC

Foodies rejoice, no need to wait until Friday to indulge whilst you're on the Yorkshire Coast.

Fish and seafood are not surprisingly in abundance here on the Coast. Traditional fish and chips shops are plentiful with that nostalgic smell of salt and vinegar wafting through the air, magnetising passers-by who can't continue walking.

For some, it's the sweet seafood that's too good to miss, delicate crab, juicy prawns and luxurious lobsters, fresh from the sea and served simply; who could resist?

The seafood found on the Yorkshire Coast is some of the best in the world, and there are some surprising facts about these delicious delicacies you ought to know before you head out on your Route YC adventure.

Lobster

Sweet lobster is the ultimate indulgence for some, and you might be surprised to know that Bridlington is the lobster capital of Europe. Our fishermen land over 300 tonnes every year, and we're proud to take this prestigious title.

Sought after by diners, these prized crustaceans are exported worldwide from the humble town of Bridlington and enjoyed in restaurants and cafes near and far.

Visit the Ship Inn located on the clifftop in Sewerby, a small village just outside Bridlington. Here they cook lobster in their wood-fired ovens to enjoy in the vast outdoor area or inside this cosy family-run gastro pub.

Scampi

Why settle for anything less than the best? As far as scampi is concerned, only Whitby Scampi will do.

The idea of scampi was created by Graham Whittle, who spotted a gap in the market as pub grub was on the rise for a premium scampi called Whitby Scampi, made within sight of the famous abbey and fishing town of Whitby.

Using succulent langoustine tails, Whitby Seafoods have been making these crispy, golden treats since 1985, and Whitby Scampi is now enjoyed by one million British people every week.

Head to the Magpie Cafe, an iconic fish restaurant in the heart of Whitby, to try these golden morsels with thick cuts chips and tartare sauce.

Woof

The Atlantic wolffish is known by many names; in these parts, it's Scarborough Woof. Actually, a type of catfish, they might look pretty terrifying, but their firm white fish is similar to haddock and is excellent for goujons; you've no doubt tried it without realising it many times!

A great choice for those who wish to support more sustainable fishing and try the many options of firm white fish we have on our shores.

Cafe Fish in Scarborough always has a superb selection of freshly landed fish on their counter to tempt diners, including Scarborough Woof, when available. Kirill, the restaurant owner, visits the harbour every morning to select only the best catch of the day.
